We read the story "Mrs. Wishy Washy". After becoming familiar with the story we made some masks and retold the story with the children.
We placed our hundreds chart on the easel during activity time and Evan showed us how he can count to 100. Way to go Evan!
Olivia brought some snails to school so we decided to place them at our science centre. We observed the children watching them and recorded the conversations they were having with their peers. - They look cool. I like the way they are slimy. I think some of them are scared. (Tayy) - He's sleeping (Elliott) - He's taking a nap (Olivia) - The big one won't come out because it is scared that we will hurt him (Evan) We then placed them in our aquarium and asked the children to describe what they saw.
- I can see one out of his shell and some slime at the bottom (Toby) - One curled up in his shell (Evan) - One is crawling on another shell (Jack) - I see a snail holding on with his sticky things (Elliott) - I see a little squiggly worm (Molly) - One is crawling (Hunter) - The big one is way up there. He is using his sticky things. He crawled up to the top. (Sophia) - He goes slow (Keltin) - One is sleeping in the leaves. The snail was moving. Maybe he is eating. (Taylor) - He worked hard eating all that food (Evan) We decided to make play dough with the class. We decided to ask the students what we were going to make rather than telling them. These are the answers we got. Taylor: play dough Shelby: Milk because we have flour. Molly: peanut butter soup Seth: I don't know. There is flour, oil, salt. We are not making pancakes because we don't have enough of the right ingredients. Cole: pancakes or maybe play dough We added all the dry ingredients together. We mixed together the oil and water and asked the students to describe what it looked like. - Molly said that it is moving up and down - Cole said that it looks like a whirlpool with bubbles. Finally we added the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. We asked the students what it looked like. - Cole said it looks like hot lava - Tayy said the white stuff is the islands We asked the students what it felt like. - Logan said it feels like cake - Olivia said I think it is play dough - Alexys said it's soft - Toby said it's doughy - Seth said it smells like flour Finally it was done and yes it was play dough!
We placed some gems and numbered containers at the math centre. Seth wandered over and started to play with them. Mrs. Jennings made her way over and heard Seth counting the gems out loud.
TP (Teacher prompt): "How did you know how many to put in the containers?" Seth: "I looked at the number 6 on the side. See 6." TP: "I wonder how many you will put in this cup?" Seth continued counting the beads one by one as he dropped them into the cups with the corresponding number. Seth: "I counted 10 rocks in this one. See 10." TP: "I wonder what we can do know?" Seth looks in one of the containers and starts to take some out and place them back into the bin. Seth: "This one says is 1." TP: "Can you tell me what you did?" Seth: "I think someone put more in so I took 2 out so that there is only 1 in the container." Great work Seth! Tayy found a horseshoe magnet and decided to walk around the room to see what it would stick to. After testing a number of things he explained to me that the things with metal in them stuck to the magnet and the things without metal didn't stick to it. Great exploring Tayy! A few of our friends decided to visit the Literacy Centre.
